The Mississippian culture was a mound-building Native American culture that flourished in what is now the Midwestern, inland-Eastern, and Southeastern United States from approximately 800 CE to 1500 CE, varying regionally. Five of these are also State Historic Sites. For consistency, the sites are named here as designated under the National Historic Landmark program. A cross-reference list of all seven State Historic Sites is provided further below, which uses different names for some sites. The NHLs are concentrated in 17 of Mississippi's 82 counties.
