There are 64 state parks, nine state recreation areas, nine state waysides, and 23 state trails in the Minnesota state park system, totaling approximately 267,000 acres (1,080 km 2). At this time Gooseberry Falls was the only Minnesota state park on Lake Superior. A bill promoted by Magney easily passed in the Minnesota Legislature, creating both Baptism River State Park (now Tettegouche State Park) and Split Rock State Scenic Wayside. The 35-acre (14 ha) wayside consisted of a hill offering a view of the Split Rock Lighthouse.
Nearly all of Minnesota's glacial landforms derive from the last of them, the Wisconsin glaciation. [11] One feature of this time in the park are the rock ridges near the campground, scoured smooth by the glacier and known as roches moutonnées.
