Abis Mal's Thugs (voiced by Jeff Bennett, Dan Castellaneta, Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, and Frank Welker) are thieves who follow Abis Mal. They first appear in The Return of Jafar , where they are shown to resent his leadership and attempt to kill him at a well before being scared off by Jafar's genie form.
During his first interaction with Aladdin and Abu, the three are attacked by Abis Mal and his henchmen, and Iago inadvertently saves Aladdin's life. In gratitude, Aladdin keeps Iago on the palace grounds, promising to speak with the Sultan on Iago's behalf. Abis Mal later finds Jafar's lamp in the well and frees him.
Mechanicles and Abis Mal meet and find they have the same common enemy: Aladdin. Luring Aladdin and his group into a trap, they plan to use Mechanicles' robotic insects with Abis Mal's magical "mood stones", which change a person's emotions to a specific emotion to throw the group into disarray to complete their revenge.
An inspiration to the character is the villain Jaffar, played by Conrad Veidt in The Thief of Bagdad, from which Aladdin borrows several character ideas and plot elements. The Jafar of Disney's Aladdin plays essentially the same part as the character from the 1940 film, and is drawn with notable similarity to Veidt's looks. [1]
