Lying Cow is the name of two oil paintings created by Vincent van Gogh around 1882 when he was living at The Hague. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] In the 1970 catalogue raisonné , based on Jacob Baart de la Faille's researches, the paintings were dated 1882. [ 5 ]
The painting was made by van Gogh during his stay in Auvers-sur-Oise, with Doctor Gachet. It is a copy, like van Gogh made many, of a study by Jacob Jordaens exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille. The painting was not copied directly, but from an etching by Doctor Gachet from 1873, signed with his artist name, Paul van Ryssel.

According to the legend, Van Gogh sold only one painting, The Red Vineyard, bought for 400 francs by the painter and art collector Anna Boch. [1]
