Although in the seventeenth century, as in modern Dutch, the term fijnschilder was used to differentiate between a painter practicing classic techniques and one who, for instance, is a house painter, in the nineteenth century it became a label for artists like Gerrit Dou and his followers in Leiden.

Jan Adriaensz. van Staveren (1614 in Leiden – 1669 in Leiden), was a Dutch Golden Age painter of the Leiden school of fijnschilders. According to the RKD he was fourteen when he entered his name in 1628 in the Leiden University Album Studiosorum , and he paid dues to the Leiden Guild of St. Luke in the years 1644–1669. [ 1 ]

He briefly fled to Hamburg for a year during the Siege of Leiden, but had returned by 1574. [3] He kept a large and respected workshop in Leiden, for oil- and glass painting. [1] His pupils were Jan van Goyen, Coenraet van Schilperoort, Otto van Veen, and his three sons. [3] He was buried in the Pieterskerk, Leiden.
