In 1986, CSX sold the brand, and the original hotel companies were dispersed, though The Greenbrier remained. The famous Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, a major resort on the C&O mainline, was the inspiration for the name "Greenbrier" applied to these 4-8-4s.
