Aldington George Curphey was born on 24 August 1880 in the St Andrew parish of Kingston, Jamaica, [1] to Thomas John Curphey and his wife Georgiana, née Cowell. His father had earlier emigrated from his native Isle of Man to become a chemist; Curphey's mother was the daughter of an English police officer.

Brendan Austin Burns [a] was born in Fort Lee, New Jersey on February 15, 1895, a son of carpenter Thomas F. Burns and Nellie M. (Leary) Burns. [1] He was raised and educated in several northern New Jersey towns, including Ridgefield and Edgewater, and his father served on Edgewater's town council.
He was awarded with the Military Cross, the Air Force Cross and the Territorial Decoration. At various times he acted as Deputy Lieutenant , Justice of the Peace , High Sheriff (1851) and County Alderman for Hertfordshire.
