The D6H was introduced in 1986 along with 3 other H-Series track-type tractors. This was the first D6 with Caterpillar's elevated drive sprocket undercarriage. The D6R replaced the D6H in 1996, and came in five models ranging from the 165 hp (123 kW) D6R to the 175 hp (130 kW) D6R XL and XR, and the 185 hp (138 kW) D6R XL (IG) and D6R LGP.

The 370 hp (280 kW) D9N replaced D8L in 1987 (this was due to a model number/size adjustment by Caterpillar in their larger bulldozer lineup at the time, allowing them to introduce a smaller D8N model below the larger D8L size). Due to the model adjustment, the D9L is the most powerful D9 in history, with a flywheel power of 460 hp (340 kW).
Caterpillar first introduced the RD4 in 1936, [1] as the diesel follow on to the successful CAT 30 gas model. The RD4 originally weighed in at 10,000 pounds (4,500 kg), and used Caterpillar's D4400 engine, an inline four-cylinders, with a 4.25 by 5.50 inches (108 mm × 140 mm) bore and stroke. [ 2 ]
