Ion Popescu-Gopo (Romanian pronunciation: [iˈon poˈpesku ˈɡopo]; 1 May 1923 – 29 November 1989) [1] was a Romanian graphic artist and animator, but also writer, film director, and actor. He was born in Bucharest, Romania. He was a prominent personality in the Romanian cinematography and the founder of the modern Romanian cartoon school.
The year 1920 marked the production of the first Romanian animated film, more precisely of the first Romanian animated cartoon, conceived by Aurel Petrescu and called Păcală în lună (Păcală on the moon). [20] Surprisingly, all the animated films of this director and artist, which he was producing into the sound era, are lost.
