UGM was the first state university in Indonesia, established as Universiteit Negeri Gadjah Mada (UNGM) when Indonesia was still facing threats from the Netherlands, which wanted to regain control. At the time, the capital of Indonesia had moved from Jakarta to Yogyakarta .
Upon completing his PhD in the United States in 1965, Mubyarto returned to take up a post at Gadjah Mada University. At the time, economic conditions in Indonesia were very difficult and the province of Yogyakarta (the Special Region of Yogyakarta, or Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta) was one of the poorest areas of Indonesia.

Gadjah Mada University Ohio State University Makarim Wibisono (born 8 May 1947) is an Indonesian diplomat and the former Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories .
At the time he was also a lecturer at Gadjah Mada University (UGM). [1] Suhardi was a member of the UGM team that framed the Fundamental Agrarian Law in 1959. [1] He was also a participant in the Asian–African Conference and part of the Catholic Faction in the Constitutional Assembly of Indonesia. [2] Suhardi died in 1988. [2]
