Iyengar Yoga, named after and developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, and described in his bestselling [1] 1966 book Light on Yoga, is a form of yoga as exercise that has an emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of yoga postures .
It operates on the fundamental principles of alignment, balance, and results. [1] Each one-hour class incorporates ballet barre work, core conditioning, muscle strengthening, yoga and orthopedic exercise through small, repeated movements. [2] The Dailey Method aims to create optimal spinal alignment and a mind-body connection in its students.
The name is from the Sanskrit जठर Jaṭhara, stomach or abdomen; परिवर्तन Parivartana, to turn around; and आसन āsana, posture or seat. [5] The pose is not found in medieval hatha yoga texts, but is described in 20th century manuals including B. K. S. Iyengar's 1966 Light on Yoga.
