Marion County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia.As of the 2020 census, the population was 56,205. [1] Its county seat is Fairmont. [2] The county was named in honor of General Francis Marion (ca. 1732–1795), known to history as "The Swamp Fox".

It is immediately south of the larger city and county seat of Fairmont, West Virginia. The city is also adjacent to the Tygart Valley River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.41 square miles (8.83 km 2), of which 3.23 square miles (8.37 km 2) is land and 0.18 square miles (0.47 km 2) is water. In 1978, the City of Fairmont began to cut funding and managed to exclude transit funding entirely. Marion County continued funding until it too discontinued funding for transit in 1988. Currently, the Authority's greatest source of income is provided by the countywide levy providing 75% of the annual budget.
The Marion County Courthouse is a Beaux-Arts style building in Fairmont, West Virginia, in the United States. The courthouse was constructed from 1897 to 1900, and was designed by the architectural firm of Yost & Packard of Columbus, Ohio. Its dome is topped by a figure carrying the scales of justice.

Fairmont Downtown Historic District is a national historic district located at Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia. The district includes 97 contributing buildings and two contributing structures in Fairmont's central business district. They are in a variety of late 19th- and early 20th-century architectural styles.
