The Kentucky River basin endured many floods during the Great Depression. An Ohio River flood in 1936 backed into the lower Kentucky; the crest reached 42.7 feet (13.0 m) high and flooded half of Frankfort, completely isolating the city. 12,000 square miles (31,000 km 2) of the Ohio Valley were flooded in all.
