Southwest Plaza is an enclosed shopping mall in unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado, immediately south of Denver. Littleton, Colorado is commonly indicated in the mall's postal address because its ZIP code is primarily associated with that city, which lies some two miles east. The mall has two levels with over 150 stores and a food court.
Lord & Taylor opened a location at the mall in 1990, a newer expanded store closed in 2004 after the chain repositioned. Other than the shops in Aspen , Cherry Creek Center is the exclusive location of several luxury retailers in Colorado, such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Brooks Brothers.
Westminster Mall opened in 1977 with Joslin's and thirty other stores. In 1980, they added the hallway that connected to the soon-to-be May D&F store, thus increasing the stores to 75. [1] A 1986 expansion added May D&F, Mervyn's, and Broadway Southwest, and 112 more stores and a modern food court, followed by JCPenney in 1987 and Wards in 1996.
Joslins Department Store began as J. Joslins Dry Goods Store, founded by John Jay Joslin in 1873; it was a direct competitor to The Denver Dry Goods Company which commenced operations in 1888. The mall was developed by Denver-based Jordan Perlmutter & Co., the same company that built Northglenn Mall and Southwest Plaza. In 1987, May Department Stores purchased Associated Dry Goods, operator of The Denver. May D&F remained at Southglenn while The Denver's building was sold to JCPenney. In 1988, the mall's first renovation took place.
