Backpacking and camping are allowed in the entire wilderness area, but no pre-made trails exist and, because of the secluded nature of the terrain, caution is advised. Hikers will occasionally run onto old roads, farms, and cabins from before the area was designated as a wilderness area that are returning to nature.

Shady Lake is located in central western Arkansas, on the southern fringe of Ouachita National Forest, about 30 miles (48 km) west of Glenwood.The lake itself is roughly crescent-shaped and was created in 1935 with the assistance of enrollees from the CCC, particularly by members from Company 742 stationed at Camp F-4 (situated within the community of Shady).
The camp was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and includes cabins, a recreation hall, and Camp Clearfork Reservoir, impounded by a CCC-built dam. [2] The camp was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. [1]
The camp has five campsites, a dining hall, health lodge, chapel, maintenance building, trading post, field sports range, two cabins, a campfire ring, a camp master cabin and a home occupied by the full time camp Ranger and his family. Camp Soule is used for short-term camping, family camping, training, day camps and various other activities.
In addition to the lodge there are 32 cabins and 127 campsites available for park visitors. The canyon and bluffs were created by Cedar Creek, which cascades into the canyon in an impressive 95-foot (29 m) waterfall. Above the falls, Cedar Creek has been dammed to create the 100-acre (40 ha) Lake Bailey which is used for pedal-boating and fishing.
The campground has nine campsites and a picnic shelter, and provides access to outdoor recreational activities including hiking, swimming, and fishing. The Flatside Wilderness was designated by passage of "The Arkansas Wilderness Act of 1984", Public Law 98-508, which was signed by President Ronald Reagan on October 19, 1984. Senator Dale Bumpers (D-AR) sponsored the Act in the U.S. Senate , which was co-sponsored by Senator David Pryor (D-AR) and Senator John Tower (R-TX).
