Secretary hand or script is a style of European handwriting developed in the early sixteenth century that remained common in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for writing English, German, Welsh and Gaelic.
The secretary hand was popular with authors of Shakespeare's time, including Christopher Marlowe and Francis Bacon. It could be written with ease and swiftness and was conducive to the use of abbreviations. As it was taught in the schools and by tutors, it allowed for great diversity—each writer could choose a style for each letter.
The English Secretary (originally The English Secretorie) is a book by the rhetorician Angel Day, first published in 1586. [1] [2] Among the most notable and popular manuals of letter writing in the 16th and 17th centuries, [3] [4] the work combines influences from medieval practices and Renaissance humanism, and reflects the expansion of the reading public in Elizabethan England.
Secretary script has a somewhat haphazard appearance and its forms of the letters a , g , r , and s are unique, unlike any forms in any other English script. The legacy of these English cursive Gothic forms survived in common use as late as the 18th century in the court hand used for some legal records.
