Kandy (Sinhala: මහනුවර Mahanuwara, pronounced ⓘ [mahanuʋərə]; Tamil: கண்டி Kandy, pronounced ⓘ) is a major city located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was the last capital of the Sinhalese monarchy from 1469 to 1818, under the Kingdom of Kandy . [ 1 ]
In 1919 the association was incorporated as a public trust, and is now administered by the Government Agent of Kandy District and a management committee. In 1924 the association was relocated to its present location, [ 5 ] the former Kunam Maduwa (House of the Palanquins), [ 7 ] which housed the palanquins used by the Kandyan royal court.
In the early 1880s the building was occupied by the Kandy Club. [1] In 1887 the club moved to a building vacated by the Orient Bank, which had gone into liquidation, later became part of the Queen's Hotel. [1] In 1924 the building was acquired by a Swiss lady, Jeanne Louisa Burdayron, who operated it as a guest house [4] before it became a hotel.
Kadugannawa Pass is a pierced rock in the Kadugannawa climb on the Kandy-Colombo road. In the 1820s when the British built the Kandy-Colombo road they pierced a rock at the Kadugannawa Pass instead of blasting it away or simply bypassing it, as the new road does today. An explanation is, that this Kadugannawa tunnel was a symbol.
The provinces of Sri Lanka were established by the British in 1833. In independent Sri Lanka, provinces did not have any legal status or power until 1987, when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. The Mahanuwara Grama Niladhari Division has a Sinhalese majority (58.2%), a significant Moor population (23.6%) and a significant Sri Lankan Tamil population (15.3%). In comparison, the Kandy Four Gravets & Gangawata Korale Divisional Secretariat (which contains the Mahanuwara Grama Niladhari Division) has a Sinhalese majority (74.6%) and a significant Moor population (10.9%) [2]
