The classification of the cervical lymph nodes is generally attributed to Henri Rouvière in his 1932 publication "Anatomie des Lymphatiques de l'Homme" [6] [7] Rouviere described the cervical lymph nodes as a collar which surrounded the upper aerodigestive tract, consisting of submental, facial, submandibular, parotid, mastoid, occipital and retropharyngeal nodes, together with two chains ...
The superficial cervical lymph nodes are lymph nodes that lie near the surface of the neck.. Some sources state simply that they lie along the external jugular vein, [1] while other sources state that they are only adjacent to the external jugular vein in the posterior triangle, and they are adjacent to the anterior jugular vein in the anterior triangle.
Diagram showing parts of the body that drain into the right lymphatic duct. The right duct drains lymph fluid from: the upper right section of the trunk, (right thoracic cavity, via the right bronchomediastinal trunk) [1] the right arm (via the right subclavian trunk) [1] and right side of the head and neck (via the right jugular trunk) [1]
The superior deep cervical lymph nodes are the deep cervical lymph nodes that are situated adjacent to the superior portion of the internal jugular vein. They drain either to the inferior deep cervical lymph nodes or into the jugular trunk.
The levels are identified by Roman numeral, increasing towards the chest. A further Level VII to denote lymph node groups in the superior mediastinum is no longer used. Instead, lymph nodes in other non-neck regions are referred to by the name of their specific nodal groups. Level I – This includes the submental and submandibular lymph nodes.
All lymphatic vessels of the head and neck ultimately drain to the deep cervical lymph nodes - either by way of other lymph nodes or directly from tissues. [4] CNS lymphatic vessels have been found to drain to the deep cervical lymph nodes in a 2016 animal study. [10]
Lymph nodes may become enlarged in malignant disease. This cervical lymphadenopathy may be reactive or metastatic. [1] Alternatively, enlarged lymph nodes may represent a primary malignancy of the lymphatic system itself, such as lymphoma (both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's), [6] lymphocytic leukemia, [1] Lymphadenopathy that lasts less than two weeks or more than one year with no progressive ...
The jugulodigastric lymph nodes are found in the proximity of where the posterior belly of the digastric muscle crosses the internal jugular vein.Nodes are typically around 15 mm in length in adults, and decrease in size during old age. [1]
