The High Sierra Trail (HST) is a hiking trail in Sequoia National Park, California.The trail crosses the Sierra Nevada from west to east. According to the Yosemite Decimal System, the HST is a Class 1/Class 2 trail, which means simple scrambling, with the possibility of occasional use of the hands for balance.
The Vogelsang High Sierra Camp is located a hiking distance of 7.6 miles (12.2 km) north by the Fletcher Creek trail, or a hiking distance of 8.4 miles (13.5 km) north by the Fletcher Creek trail and then over Vogelsang Pass. The Sierra High Route (also called the Roper Route and the High Route) is a cross-country hiking route, 195 miles (314 km) long, through the Sierra Nevada.It was scouted by Steve Roper and described by him in his book Sierra High Route: Traversing Timberline Country.
It is located approximately 6 miles (10 km) north of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous U.S., and about 2.5 miles (4 km) southwest of Shepherd Pass, the nearest trail access. The closest town is Independence, California , about 12 miles (19 km) to the north-north-east.
At 13,153 feet (4,009 m), Forester Pass is the highest point along the Pacific Crest Trail. It is also the southernmost of the six high mountain passes above 11,000 feet along the John Muir Trail, with (in order from north to south) Donohue Pass, Muir Pass, Mather Pass, Pinchot Pass, and Glen Pass.
