The Ulster Special Constabulary (USC; commonly called the "B-Specials" or "B Men") was a quasi-military [1] reserve special constable police force in what would later become Northern Ireland. It was set up in October 1920, shortly before the partition of Ireland.
The Bessbrook Support Unit were in 1979 replaced with a Special Patrol Group (SPG), which was in turn replaced in 1981 by the Special Support Unit (SSU). [4] The SSU was subsequently renamed the Headquarters Mobile Support Unit (HMSU) after two of its members were convicted of kidnap and murder. [5]
The Special Patrol Group (SPG) was a unit of Greater London's Metropolitan Police Service, responsible for providing a centrally based mobile capacity to combat serious public disorder, crime, and terrorism, that could not be dealt with by local divisions. [1] The SPG was active from 1961 to 12 January 1987.
