Zhdanov was born on 26 February [O.S. 14 February] 1896 in Mariupol, Mariupol uezd, Yekaterinoslav Governorate, Russian Empire (now Ukraine), where his father, Alexander Alekseevich Zhdanov (1860-1909), was a school inspector.
