West Australian Ballet is the State ballet company of Western Australia and is based in Perth, at the Western Australian Ballet Centre in Maylands. [2] The company was founded in 1952 by Madame Kira Bousloff (formerly of the Ballets Russes) [3] and the oldest ballet company in Australia.
Kira Abricossova Bousloff OAM (1914–2001) [1] was a dancer with Ballets Russes who toured Australia in 1938 and stayed, divorcing first husband Serge Bousloff then marrying (and divorcing) James Penberthy while having a significant influence on the evolution of ballet in Western Australia.
The West Australian Ballet Centre is situated on the historical site of the former Blind Institute in Maylands. The history of the building site dates back to 1897 when the Victoria Institute and the Industrial School for the Blind was developed as a part of the celebrations for the 60th year of Queen Victoria’s reign.

Martin was part of the first cohort of the Australian Ballet School's third year class in 1969. [5] She was one of the dancers in the inaugural professional ensemble of the West Australian Ballet. [6] Martin was a dancer in the scenes [7] choreographed by Margaret Scott in the controversial 1970 documentary The Naked Bunyip. [8]
In Western Australia in late 1953 Wulffius met Madame Kira Bousloff of the Western Australian Ballet and they became close friends. Madame Kira speaks of her lovingly in an interview with Michelle Potter in 1990.
Cavallari was the artistic director of the West Australian Ballet in Perth, the oldest company of Australia (created in 1952 by Kira Abrissokova (Bousloff)), from 2007 till 2012. In 2008, his choreography of The Nutcracker received critical acclaim.
He made his home in Perth, Western Australia, where he founded the West Australian Opera Company and was co-founder of the West Australian Ballet with his third wife, the Monaco-born Russian dancer Kira Bousloff. In 1975 he moved to the north coast of New South Wales. He founded the School of Arts at Southern Cross University.
