The District of Columbia, capital of the United States, is home to 76 National Historic Landmarks. The National Historic Landmark program is operated under the auspices of the National Park Service, and recognizes structures, districts, objects, and similar resources according to a list of criteria of national significance. The D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites was created in 1964, and was originally compiled by the predecessor to the HPRB, the Joint Committee on Landmarks of the National Capital. As of 2019, the Inventory includes approximately 750 historic sites and 50 historic districts. [3]
