La Junta received service by Continental Airlines with Douglas DC-3 aircraft from 1944 through 1957. The airport was one of several stops on a route between Denver and Tulsa which included stops at Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Wichita.

The airport is located on the east side of Colorado Springs, accessible by Milton E. Proby Parkway via Powers Boulevard/SH 21.Milton E. Proby Parkway loops through the airport running north to the terminal, with exits to long and short term parking and rental car return, and eventually splits into an upper departures drop-off area and lower arrivals pick-up area east of the terminal.

At La Junta, SH 109 intersects US 50 indirectly via SH 109 Spur (3rd Street). After crossing over US 50, the road continues northward, passing the La Junta Municipal Airport , to the small town of Cheraw where the road officially ends by becoming a city street called Grand Avenue.
