The South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is a National Health Service trust formed from the merger of City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust in April 2019. City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust was established as an NHS Trust in April 1994 and became an NHS Foundation Trust in July 2004, providing services in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. It operates Sunderland Royal Hospital , Sunderland Eye Infirmary , The Children’s Centre, Durham Road and Church View Medical Practice.
The combined workhouse and infirmary facility became the Highfield Institute and Municipal Hospital in 1930 and it joined the National Health Service as Sunderland General Hospital in 1948. [2] It was renamed Sunderland Royal Hospital in 1996. [1]
It achieved the bronze status Investors in People Award in 2015. [4] It was named by the Health Service Journal as one of the top hundred NHS trusts to work for in 2015. At that time it had 3818 full time equivalent staff and a sickness absence rate of 5.71%. 63% of staff recommend it as a place for treatment and 57% recommended it as a place to work. [5]

The Somerset Hospital is a district general hospital in the Green Point area of Cape Town, South Africa opened in 1864 and has been declared a provincial heritage site. [1] It subsequently moved to Crowtree Terrace and then relocated to Stockton Road in 1893. [1] It became the Sunderland and Durham County Eye Infirmary in 1903 and the Durham County and Sunderland Eye Infirmary in 1911. [1]
