China was an insignificant portion of the box office in 2005 - Batman Begins apparently only made about $1 million total in China. The 2.5x rule is a more recent thing to account for heavier international-lean in box office totals as well as China gross. Using an older rule of thumb, Batman Begins probably broke even (if barely) theatrically.
Batman Begins opened 18 years ago. The $150 million movie opened to $48 million DOM. It grossed $205 million DOM and $373.7 million WW. It is considered to be one of the greatest superhero movies of all time.
Batman Begins had to reboot the Batman film series after Batman and Robin was a critical failure and a box office disappointment. There was an 8 year gap between B&R and BB so I think that long gap as well as the negative reception to the Schumacher movies turned people off from Batman.

Batman Begins' domestic gross was $205,343,774. It's foreign gross was $166,510,009. If WB took ~60% of the domestic gross ($123,206,264.4 ) and 40% of the foreign gross ($66,604,003.6), then Batman Begins earned $189,810,268. If WB spent $150 million on the film - then the movie earned $39 million - which is still (arguably) a consistent ...
Probably the greatest comparison to Batman Begins' box office is X-Men: First Class & The Wolverine. Both rank near the bottom of the series overall but both sparked renewed interest in the series with X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan being among the best (Deadpool is truly the outlier of the series being the first R-rated as well as the highest grossing of the X movies beating out ...
Both films came out within a year of each other. Batman Begins made $374 million WW, and Superman Returns $395 million. However, Superman Returns' budget was much higher, some $50 to $80 million more. Also the Batman franchise was still a box office draw by the time of Batman Begins, earning an inflation adjusted $388 million in 1997.
Begins probably just barely broke a profit in its initial run but it got people invested in the character again. It also went on to do well in home release and on tv so it got the job done even if it didn’t do outstanding at the box office. However I think it’d do much better in today’s environment.
Man of Steel did twice as good as Batman Begins in terms of box office. That didn’t stop WB from panicking and immediately changing course to disastrous result. If Superman makes as little money as Batman Begins (under 400m), expect WB to cancel the entire DCU.
Superman Returns was good enough for a sequel, but the box office returns scared WB off. Batman Begins made less and year prior, yet recieved a sequel (one the made a billion). WB hasn't invested in Superman enough for us to find out if people actually care. The last two iterations never had a direct follow up.
