Agricultural lime, also called aglime, agricultural limestone, garden lime or liming, is a soil additive made from pulverized limestone or chalk. The primary active component is calcium carbonate . Additional chemicals vary depending on the mineral source and may include calcium oxide .
The term "calcium ammonium nitrate" is applied to multiple different, but closely related formulations. One variety of calcium ammonium nitrate is made by adding powdered limestone to ammonium nitrate; [1] [2] another, fully water-soluble version, is a mixture of calcium nitrate and ammonium nitrate, which crystallizes as a hydrated double salt: [3] 5Ca(NO 3) 2 •NH 4 NO 3 •10H 2 O.
It is the calcium salt of the cyanamide (CN 2− 2) anion. This chemical is used as fertilizer [3] and is commercially known as nitrolime. It also has herbicidal activity and in the 1950s was marketed as cyanamid. [4] [5] It was first synthesized in 1898 by Adolph Frank and Nikodem Caro (Frank–Caro process). [6]
