   It did put a new shortcut on the desktop but, on opening Facebook, it's still extra-large showing only posts. the right-hand sidebar which shows contacts is off-screen and also the left-hand sidebar is off-screen. Again thanks for the help. (see photo)

    Hover over that icon and it should say 'Install Facebook'. This will install Messenger as a Google Chrome app and allow you to open links in Chrome instead of being forced to use Edge given the recent changes.
