West Virginia's folk heritage is a part of the Appalachian folk music tradition, and includes styles of fiddling, ballad singing, and other styles that draw on Ulster-Scots music. West Virginia consists of a mostly rural region, although its few relatively urban centers are prominent spots of musical innovation.

The nonprofit West Virginia Music Hall of Fame was established in 2005, to honor the legacies of the state's performing artists in multiple music genres. This hall of fame is the brainchild of its founder, musician Michael Lipton, who was inspired by a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mattea also began playing guitar in her teen years after discovering folk music. [4] In addition to folk, Mattea also took an interest in bluegrass, which she would later say "formed [her] roots" as an artist. [5] In 1976, while attending West Virginia University, she joined a bluegrass band. [3]
The newly named West Virginia Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 50th anniversary during the 1989–1990 season. The highlight of the year-long observances was a five-concert tour culminating in a performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. , on October 29, 1989.
