Kershaw County was named for Col. Joseph Kershaw (1727–1791), an early settler considered as "the father of Camden". Originally part of Camden District, Kershaw County was formed in 1791 from parts of Claremont, Lancaster, Fairfield, and Richland counties. The county seat is Camden, the oldest inland city in South Carolina.

In 1800, all counties were renamed as districts. In 1868, the districts were converted back to counties. Boykin is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. Its population was 100 as of the 2010 census. [2] Boykin is located on South Carolina Highway 261, 9 miles (14 km) south of Camden. It is named for John Boykin, an early resident. [4]
