The best sounding portable CD players came out in the late 80's to the mid 90's. The Sony brand was the best. After that period of time, the newer models not only looked cheaper because of too much use of plastic materials but generally sounds inferior to the older models.
After spending a lot on high end CD players want to share this. A wonderfull sound, reminding of analogue, ear pleasing, real high end comes from the Panasonic SL-S120 portable CD player from the line out. (0,6 Volt). No opamps for amplifying to 2 Volt line out. Same story for the Sony portable D25. (service manuals on Internet for circuit ...
A couple of years ago, when I noticed the dropping availability of good portable CD players, I decided to pick up a number of what-appeared-to-be-still-good portable CD/MP3 players (that use standard AA batteries) before they were gone. In addition to my current Sony Walkman CD/MP3 player, I have a number of good Philips portable CD/MP3 players.
I think Sony should make a audio based disc player based on the UHP-H1/x800/x1000 style chassis. I love how quiet the UBP-x800 is. I can't hear it at all when spinning discs. How come other manufactures struggle making a quiet transport/disc player? The x800 is pretty budget level price too. They should make a new ES type cd/sacd player.
The problem I see with a portable SACD player is that Sony would be fighting a losing battle against iPods and other portable MP3 players in the mass market. Sony's own minidisc technology (including Hi-MD) has not done well against portable MP3 players from what I've seen, so I can't see how SACD would fare well, despite the obvious sonic ...
TEAC pd301 is the best equipped CD player in its price range. It's specs compete with many others reference players, like the rotel uses the same dac and a teac loading mechanism. ChefBrunch , Jan 2, 2023
I remember a rumour going around about 5 years ago that Mk1 Playstations sounded brilliant when playing CD's ..Probably started by someone who had a job-lot of the consoles..If you want an old school reasonably priced Cd player that could be realistically described as the best sounding CD player ever..Then i would go for the mid-90's Sony CDP-715E..Serveral hi-fi magazines at the time ...
There is this list if you can make sense of it: CD Drive Accuracy 2022 I've been using dBpoweramp CD Ripper for 5+ years for ultra-secure and accurate ripping and my drive is HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GU90N (made by LG Electronics) but I don't even see it on the list of best or worst drives.
The Yamaha CD-S300 is a discontinued model though. New CD only players are getting harder to find and more people are just buying separate DACs and their Blu-ray players. If you stumble across a decent CD player from the 1990s-2000s at a very cheap price, snatch it up and use it until it dies and then go back to the Blu-ray player with a ...
I still have a Sony CD/MP3 player that will works and I've always liked the Sony CD/MP3 players. My first CD/MP3 player was the first one that Sony released and it was one of the best player's I've ever had. If the player hadn't died I'd still be using it to this day (I wished I'd bought a backup player). I also have number of Philips CD/MP3 ...
