Harding began in the Gulf South Conference in 2000 before moving to the newly formed Great American Conference (GAC) in 2011. In the GAC's first season, Harding won conference championships in women's cross country and women's golf and placed second in the conference's all-sports trophy standings.

The conference also announced no in-conference competition for spring 2021 play. Schools scheduled own games if desired to play. Arkansas Tech , Arkansas–Monticello , Harding , Henderson State , NW Oklahoma State , Oklahoma Baptist , Ouachita Baptist , SE Oklahoma State , Southern Arkansas and SW Oklahoma State opted out of the spring season.
The Harding Bisons football program represents Harding University in college football as a Division II member of the Great American Conference. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Harding is located in Searcy, Arkansas. The Bisons are led by head coach Paul Simmons , a former Harding linebacker.
The Great American Conference men's basketball tournament is the annual conference basketball championship tournament for the Great American Conference. The tournament has been held annually since 2012, one year after the conference was initially founded. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. [1]
In their sixth year under head coach Paul Simmons, the team compiled a perfect 15–0 record (11–0 against conference opponents), outscored opponents by a total of 665 to 156, and won the GAC and NCAA Division II championships. The team also set an NCAA record for most rushing yards in a season with 6,161 rushing yards.
The Great American Conference sponsors championship events for 12 of its 13 sports. The football champion is the team with the best conference record. Northwestern Oklahoma State and Southern Nazarene were provisional members and not eligible for regular season championships or postseason championship tournaments.
