Short QT syndrome (SQT) is a very rare genetic disease of the electrical system of the heart, and is associated with an increased risk of abnormal heart rhythms and sudden cardiac death. [1] The syndrome gets its name from a characteristic feature seen on an electrocardiogram (ECG) – a shortening of the QT interval .
Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a condition affecting repolarization (relaxing) of the heart after a heartbeat, giving rise to an abnormally lengthy QT interval. [7] It results in an increased risk of an irregular heartbeat which can result in fainting, drowning, seizures, or sudden death. [1]
People with TIC most often present with symptoms of congestive heart failure and/or symptoms related to their irregular heart rhythm. [1] Symptoms of congestive heart failure can include shortness of breath, ankle swelling, fatigue, and weight gain. [2] Symptoms of an irregular heart rhythm can include palpitations and chest discomfort. [2]
Medications for a fast heart rate may include beta blockers, or antiarrhythmic agents such as procainamide, which attempt to restore a normal heart rhythm. [6] This latter group may have more significant side effects, especially if taken for a long period of time. [6] Pacemakers are often used for slow heart rates. [6]
