George Wheeler Schofield (September 20, 1833 – December 17, 1882) was an American Union brevet brigadier general during the period of the American Civil War. He received his appointment as brevet brigadier general dated to January 26, 1865.
In 1869 the company developed a large frame break action single action revolver with an automatic empty case ejector, first produced 1870, in the calibers .44 S&W American and .44 Henry. The design is known as the Smith & Wesson Model 3. The famed American frontiersman and gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok was known to carry a No. 2 later in his life.
The final version of these top-break double-action 38's was the Perfected Model. This version used a top break with a sideplate thumb latch and was made from 1909 until 1920 for a total of 59,400 revolvers. This model was used by Floyd Allen in a courthouse escape attempt in 1913. [1]
