The first mention of the number line used for operation purposes is found in John Wallis's Treatise of Algebra (1685). [2] [page needed] In his treatise, Wallis describes addition and subtraction on a number line in terms of moving forward and backward, under the metaphor of a person walking.
To teach integer addition and subtraction, a number line is often used. A typical positive/negative number line spans from −20 to 20. For a problem such as “−15 + 17”, students are told to “find −15 and count 17 spaces to the right”.

Although negative numbers are not taught in the 2nd grade, "constructivist" student subtracting 9 from 28 explains that "8 minus 9 equals negative 1" and then argues that "-1 plus 20 is the same as 20-1 and equals 19."

The latest study, in 2003, found that children from Singapore at both grade levels had the highest performance. Countries like Hong Kong SAR, Japan, and Taiwan also shared high levels of numeracy.
