Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife sanctuary encompassing the majority of Plum Island in northeastern Essex County, Massachusetts, 5 miles southeast of Newburyport. It was established in 1942 primarily to provide feeding, resting, and nesting habitats for migratory birds.

Plum Island is an island in Lake Michigan in the southern part of the town of Washington in Door County, off the tip of the Door Peninsula in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. [1] The uninhabited island has a land area of 1.179 square kilometres (0.455 sq mi) or 117.87 hectares (291.3 acres).
Hog Island covers 2 acres (8,100 m 2) of land, Plum Island 325 acres (1.32 km 2), and Pilot Island approximately 3.7 acres (15,000 m 2). The islands are part of the Niagara Escarpment as opposed to the Black River or Magnesian escarpments. The underlying bedrock is dolomite. [1] The area was sculpted by glaciers.

The Parker River Refuge on Plum Island, Massachusetts is a national network of lands and rivers dedicated to the safety of its native wildlife and specifically the piping plover. Protecting the Piper with full beach closures, the Refuge now "has the second largest plover population on the [Massachusetts] North Shore ".
