For titles of books, articles, poems, and so forth, use italics or quotation marks following the guidance for titles. Italics can also be added to mark up non-English terms (with the {} template), for an organism's scientific name, and to indicate a words-as-words usage.
MLA says italics. Chicago says quotation marks. That seems to allow us to choose our own style; since italics has been the consensus for over ten years here on WP, we should stay with that unless there is an RFC or some other consensus discussion that determines we should do otherwise. – Jonesey95 15:58, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

Minor works (and any specifically titled subdivisions of italicized major works) are given in double quotation marks not italics, even when the title is not in English. (For details, see § When not to use italics.) These cases are well-established conventions recognized in most style guides.
Article titles cannot contain wiki formatting, such as '', so article titles cannot be italicized in the normal way. This template has the following effects: Titles with no parentheses are fully italicized: Foo → Foo; Talk:Foo → Talk:Foo; Titles which contain parentheses are italicized before the first opening parenthesis: Foo (bar) → Foo ...
The Chicago Manual of Style article argues that we should only italicize series titles when they're the official title of a collected work, though, or possibly if they're also the title of an individual work, meaning we should write The Chronicles of Amber and The Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter series and the Dragaera series.
If script-quote is defined, use quote to hold a Romanization (if available) of the text in script-quote. script-quote : Original quotation for languages that do not use a Latin-based script (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, etc.); not italicized, follows italicized Romanization defined in quote (if available).
