The Blue Line is a rapid transit line in the Greater Boston metropolitan area, one of four rapid transit lines operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). It runs from Bowdoin station in downtown Boston under Boston Harbor to East Boston and Revere on the inner North Shore, where it terminates at Wonderland .
The MBTA is in the process of replacing its entire fleet of Red Line and Orange Line cars, which are over 40 years old, as of 2024. [14] The Blue Line cars were replaced in 2008. The Green Line has a variety of vehicles, some dating back to 1986, with the latest batch delivered in 2019.
The Blue Line and Red Line are currently the only two MBTA subway rail lines without a direct connection; passengers must either ride one stop on the Green (or Orange) lines to transfer, or walk 0.5 miles (0.80 km) on Cambridge Street between Bowdoin and Charles/MGH.
The MBTA bought the Penn Central (New York Central and New Haven) commuter rail lines in January 1973, Penn Central equipment in April 1976, and all B&M commuter assets in December 1976; these purchases served to make the system state-owned with the private railroads retained solely as operators. [13]
The newly formed Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) assigned colors to the four MBTA subway lines in 1965, with the East Boston Tunnel and Revere Extension becoming the Blue Line. [1] The station was modernized in 1967–1968 as part of a $9 million systemwide station improvement program. [ 24 ]
The Blue Line has two side platforms under State Street and the Old State House. The Blue line platforms are on the same level as the southbound Orange Line platform; the Blue Line tracks pass over the northbound Orange Line platform. [3] The station is served by MBTA bus routes 4, 92, 93, and 354. [4]
This list includes all rapid transit, light rail, and bus rapid transit (BRT) stations currently open on the MBTA's subway system. As of December 2022, the system has 153 stops and stations served by the Green, Blue, Red, Orange, and Silver lines. [1]
