The Roman Catholic Church in the United States comprises 195 dioceses led by diocesan bishops. Auxiliary bishops serve in association with the diocesan bishops in larger dioceses. There are thirty-two ecclesiastical provinces , each headed by a metropolitan archbishop , of which the Archbishop of Saint Louis is one.

St. Liborius was established as a German national parish in 1856. [2] The church building is a large Gothic Revival structure covered in red brick. It was designed by New York City architect William Shickel. [3] At one time the central bell tower featured a stone tracery spire. It was removed in the 1960s. [4] The church was completed in 1889.
In 1977, St. Henry Church (founded in 1885) merged with Immaculate Conception. [4] The parish became known as Immaculate Conception/St. Henry's and was staffed by the Augustinians. The former St. Henry's Church at Rutger and California Streets was destroyed as a result of two fires in the mid 1990s and had to be torn down. [5]
