Patrick Henry High School was established in 1961 upon the completion of its construction, with the capacity to accommodate around 1,200 students. Patrick Henry was an open campus-style school with three main buildings (Parsons Building, Persinger Building, McQuilkin Building) named after prominent RCPS and Roanoke community members.
He then attended the Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York on a Rockefeller Brothers Theological Fellowship (1966–67) but withdrew to attend law school. Edwards graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law (J.D. 1970), where he was a member of the Law Review and elected to Omicron Delta Kappa and the Raven
He was raised in Roanoke, Virginia, and played basketball at Patrick Henry High for coach Woody Deans. Lynch was part of the 1988 Virginia State Champion Team at Patrick Henry. For his senior year, he transferred to Flint Hill School, a prep school located outside Washington, D.C. to better his chances at college prospects.
