A man named John Burton started working at the Nantahala Outdoor Center when it first opened and soon became president of the center.
It then goes by Nantahala Outdoor Center at the Nantahala River Gorge and the Nantahala River crossing. Up to this point, the trail is maintained by the Nantahala Hiking Club.
