Maclear's Beacon is a triangulation station used in Maclear's arc measurement for Earth's circumference determination. The beacon is situated on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. It is situated on the Eastern end on the plateau of the mountain, roughly 3km from the Cable Car Station. [1]
The city of Kimberly had power to light up its street lights in 1882. [2] The Graaff Electric Lighting Works power plant was commissioned by the Cape Town City Council in April 1895 after the completion of the Molteno Reservoir that was constructed to help supply potable water to the rapidly growing city. [1]
An arc lamp or arc light is a lamp that produces light by an electric arc (also called a voltaic arc). The carbon arc light, which consists of an arc between carbon electrodes in air, invented by Humphry Davy in the first decade of the 1800s, was the first practical electric light .
It operated a 16-light Brush electric dynamo lighting several storefronts in Grand Rapids, Michigan. [13] [14] It is the earliest predecessor of Consumers Energy of Jackson, Michigan. In December 1880, Brush Electric Company set up a central station to supply a 2-mile (3.2 km) length of Broadway with arc lighting.
His experiments with alternating current arc lighting at South Foreland Lighthouse in 1857-60 [6] were the subject of a lecture by Michael Faraday at the Royal Institution. [7] One of Holmes' generators built in 1867 and used at Souter Lighthouse is displayed at the Science Museum, London.
1841 Arc-lighting is used as experimental public lighting in Paris. 1853 Ignacy Łukasiewicz invents the modern kerosene lamp. 1856 glassblower Heinrich Geissler confines the electric arc in a Geissler tube. 1867 Edmond Becquerel demonstrates the first fluorescent lamp. [7] 1874 Alexander Lodygin patents an incandescent light bulb.
The war of the currents was a series of events surrounding the introduction of competing electric power transmission systems in the late 1880s and early 1890s. It grew out of two lighting systems developed in the late 1870s and early 1880s: arc lamp street lighting running on high-voltage alternating current (AC), and large-scale low-voltage direct current (DC) indoor incandescent lighting ...
