El Portal (Spanish for "The Gateway") is a census-designated place [4] in Mariposa County, California, United States. [2] It is located 11.5 miles (19 km) west-southwest of Yosemite Village, [5] at an elevation of 1,939 feet (591 m). [2] The population was 372 at the 2020 census, [3] down from 474 at the 2010 census.
Mount Ophir during the early 1850s was a large camp, and stores and tents straggled along the main road for quite a distance. In 1854, Louis Trabucco purchased the stone-walled trading post in Mount Ophir, which was patronized by miners and packers. Its ruins now stand next to the foundation of a large two-store frame hotel built in 1852.
The hotel occupied 23.7 acres at 3400 Wilshire Boulevard, bordered by Wilshire Boulevard at the north, 8th Street at the south, Catalina Street at the east, and nearly to Mariposa Avenue at the west. [9] When the hotel's Cocoanut Grove nightclub opened on April 21, 1921, it officially solidified the hotel's social scene.
In January 1997, during a 100-year flood of the nearby Merced River, some 189 cabins and 108 hotel rooms of the Lodge were destroyed or badly damaged as a result. The Lodge complex lost 54% of its total capacity of 546 rooms by this.

While it began as the state's largest county, territory that was once part of Mariposa was ceded over time to form all or part of twelve other counties, including all of Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, and Kern; and parts of San Benito, Mono, Inyo, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles.
