Diagnosis of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) is challenging, with a wrong diagnosis occurring in between 32 and 42 % of cases. Such errors further increase the mortality risk due to incorrect first response and treatment. In cases of misdiagnosis, aortic rupture is often mistaken for ureteric colic and myocardial infarction (MI). [3]
Aortic rupture is a surgical emergency and has a high mortality even with prompt treatment. Weekend admission for a ruptured aortic aneurysm is associated with increased mortality compared with admission on a weekday, and this is likely due to several factors including a delay in prompt surgical intervention. [16]
A study of people who died after traumatic aortic rupture found that in 55–65% of cases the damage was at the aortic isthmus and in 10–14% it was in the ascending aorta or aortic arch. [4] An angiogram will often show an irregular outpouching beyond the takeoff of the left subclavian artery at the aortic isthmus, representing an aortic ...
In 2010, Starnes and his colleagues published a study on outcomes of different treatment regimens for hospital patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, an injury with short-term survival rate of less than 58% in one hospital study. [18]
There is a high mortality rate associated with abdominal compartment syndrome. [4] [11] ... Trauma, peritonitis, acute pancreatitis, ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm
Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is a type of minimally-invasive endovascular surgery used to treat pathology of the aorta, most commonly an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). When used to treat thoracic aortic disease, the procedure is then specifically termed TEVAR for "thoracic endovascular aortic/aneurysm repair."
The longer it takes to achieve hemostasis in people with traumatic causes (e.g. pelvic fracture) and non-traumatic causes (e.g. gastrointestinal bleeding, ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm), the higher the death rate is. [4] Unlike with external bleeding, most internal bleeding cannot be controlled by applying pressure to the site of injury. [12]
