Simmons University (previously Simmons College) is a private university in Boston, Massachusetts. It was established in 1899 by clothing manufacturer John Simmons. In 2018, it reorganized its structure and changed its name to a university. Its undergraduate program is women-focused while its graduate programs are co-educational.
The school was renamed Simmons College in 1892 in honor of an early contributor, James B. Simmons. By 1907 it claimed an enrollment of 524 and a staff of 49. [4] In 1925, it became Simmons University. It was renamed Hardin–Simmons University in 1934 in honor of Mary and John G. Hardin, who were also major contributors. [5]
By 1893 the school had 159 students, and by 1900 it was offering professional degrees in nursing and law in cooperation with the University of Louisville. The Simmons Sirens are the official a cappella group of Simmons University in Boston.The Sirens participate in competitions and performances around the Boston area. Simmons Sirens was formed in 1989 when a group of six Simmons students left the school choral group Persimmons with the goal of creating their own, student-run a cappella group. [1]
