Greensboro was founded circa 1780; in 1787, it was designated the seat of the newly formed Greene County. It was incorporated as a town in 1803 and as a city in 1855. [4] The city was named for Major General Nathanael Greene, commander of the rebel American forces at the Battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781. [5]
Dawson was born in Greensboro, Greene County, Georgia, January 4, 1798.His parents were George Dawson, Sr. and Katie Ruth Marston Skidmore. After taking an academic course from the Rev. Dr. Cumming, Dawson attended the county academy in Greensboro, and then was graduated from Franklin College, Athens, Clarke County, Georgia, in 1816 at the age of eighteen.
