Stepney takes a break from working with Rusty and goes to work at the quarry with Toby and Mavis. However, after a delivery with a goods train, he gets lost and ends up in the smelter's yard, where diesels called Iron 'Arry and Iron Bert want him for scrap. Fortunately, the Fat Controller finds him and helps him get back home.

The series focuses on the adventures of a younger version of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends, including Percy, Nia, Kana, and Diesel. Rosie and Emily are pulling a train for a fair, but Rosie wants to pull it alone to prove her worth. Her attempt goes badly wrong, causing all sorts of accidents with one truck hits the Level Crossing, another truck hits Stepney in a siding, and the flatbed of chairs crash into Emily at the bottom of Gordon's Hill, and she only ends up delivering two trucks.
At the docks, however, a giant crane knocks Edward over with a huge boiler, much to Cranky's amusement. Because Edward cannot get repaired in time for him to take the band, his job is given to Bertie. The next morning, Bertie gets stuck on a muddy road, but Edward gets repaired at the same time, so he ends up taking the band after all.
Unfortunately, he is rather careless and gets into a lot of trouble (in James and the Bootlace, James is grumpy after being threatened with blue paint and having to fetch his own coaches), but by making some troublesome trucks behave and by pulling the Express very well, he proves himself later.
