For he who swears, shows either reverence or love for that by which he swears. Thus when the Jews swore by the Angels, by the city of Jerusalem, by the temple and the elements, they paid to the creature the honour and worship belonging to God; for it is commanded in the Law that we should not swear but by the Lord our God. [6]
In John 13:13–14 Jesus used the term 'teacher' and 'lord' as synonyms, but here 'my Lord' is designated to the risen Christ, and 'my God' resumes Jesus' description in the Prologue as 'God' (John 1:1, 18). [2] This is the only time in the four canonical gospels that Jesus is addressed as God. [3]
It is written in Leviticus, Thou shalt not forswear thyself in my name; (c. 19:12.) and that they should not make gods of the creature, they are commanded to render to God their oaths, and not to swear by any creature, Render to the Lord thy oaths; that is, if you shall have occasion to swear, you shall swear by the Creator and not by the creature.
The gospel's concluding verses set out its purpose, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name." In John, he speaks to his mother, says he thirsts, and declares the end of his earthly life. This is an example of the Christian approach to the construction of a gospel harmony , in which material from different gospels is combined, producing an account that goes beyond each gospel.
The New King James Version divides this chapter into three sections: John 17:1–5: Jesus Prays for Himself; John 17:6–19: Jesus Prays for His Disciples; John 17:20–26: Jesus Prays for All Believers. [4] The book containing this chapter is anonymous, but early Christian tradition uniformly affirmed that John composed this Gospel. [5]
Thus he argues that swearing by the earth is the same as swearing by God as the earth is "god's footstool", while swearing by Jerusalem is the same as swearing by God as it is his city. [5] Matthew 5:33-5:36 is reiterated in James 5:12: But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth,
The "Johannine Comma" is a short clause found in 1 John 5:7–8.. The King James Bible (1611) contains the Johannine comma. [10]Erasmus omitted the text of the Johannine Comma from his first and second editions of the Greek-Latin New Testament (the Novum Instrumentum omne) because it was not in his Greek manuscripts.
