U.S. Route 258 (US 258) is a spur of US 58 in the U.S. states of North Carolina and Virginia.The U.S. Highway runs 220.15 miles (354.30 km) from US 17 Business and NC 24 Business in Jacksonville, North Carolina north to Virginia State Route 143 (SR 143) at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia.
The section between Scotland Neck and Rich Square was rerouted in 1925; the northern terminus of NC 125 was moved near Halifax. In 1965 the route was expanded northwards, replacing several secondary routes, to end at US 158 in Roanoke Rapids. The current northern terminus was achieved in 1981, following East 10th Street to the NC 48 intersection.
In 1922, the first NC 128 existed briefly, originally running from Scotland Neck to Rich Square. [3] It was quickly renumbered to NC 125 (now US 258). The current route was numbered NC 128, on or around 1947, as a new primary route and has remained unchanged since. [4] The road itself existed earlier as a toll road on a 1936 county map.
In 1967 or 1968, NC 903 was extended north, overlapping with NC 125 to Hamilton, then on new primary routing to US 258/NC 125 in Scotland Neck. [3] Around 1972, NC 903 extended northwest along NC 125 to Halifax, then west on new primary routing to I-95.
