Spindale is located along U.S. Route 221A between Forest City to the southeast and Rutherfordton to the west. U.S. Route 74A passes through the southern part of town.. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14 km 2), all of it land.

Gilbert Town Historic District is an archaeological site listed in the National Register of Historic Places located in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina. From 1776 to 1783, Gilbert Town was an important trading center and served as a camp for both Patriot and Loyalist forces during the American Revolutionary War .
